| CHICAGO -- Brandon Cumpton pitched seven scoreless innings, Travis Snider hit a solo homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Sunday. Tony Perez Jersey . Cumpton (3-2) won his third straight decision as the Pirates won the last two games of the three-game series. Cumpton allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out four. The rookie right-hander retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced. He allowed a walk to Nate Schierholtz in the fifth inning, but rebounded by getting John Baker to hit into an inning-ending double play. Ryan Sweeney reached on a single against Cumpton in the first inning and the other hit was by Cubs starting pitcher Jason Hammel in the sixth. Pirates closer Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 15 chances. Melancon gave up back-to-back singles to Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro. Melancon then struck out Luis Valbuena and got Schierholtz to hit into a fielders choice as Rizzo scored. Melancon finished the game by getting Junior Lake to fly out. Gregory Polanco had his hitting streak snapped at 11 games. The Pirates rookie leadoff hitter had a hit in his first 11 major league games. He was 0 for 3 with a walk. Hammel (6-5) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Hammels first pitch of the third inning was hit over the centre-field wall by Snider. It was Sniders fourth of the season. Later in the inning, Josh Harrison hit a liner right back at Hammel. The ball ricocheted off Hammels right side and allowed Chris Stewart to score from third. Harrison reached first base without a throw. Hammel was briefly looked at by a team trainer. Pirates reliever Tony Watson pitched out of trouble in the eighth. With runners on second and third with one out, Watson struck out pinch-hitters Welington Castillo and Justin Ruggiano. NOTES: Cubs OF Emilio Bonifacio has yet to return to baseball activities after being placed on the disabled list on June 13 with a rib injury. MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins fired offensive line coach Jim Turner and longtime head athletic trainer Kevin ONeill on Wednesday for their roles in the teams bullying scandal. The moves were the first punitive steps taken by the Dolphins since a report on the NFLs investigation of the case was released last week. Investigators found that guard Richie Incognito and two teammates engaged in persistent harassment directed at tackle Jonathan Martin, another offensive lineman and an assistant trainer. Martin left the team at midseason, and Incognito was suspended for the final eight games. Turner didnt attempt to stop the harassment and even took part in some of the taunting of offensive lineman Andrew McDonald, the NFL report said. ONeill expressed hostility toward the investigation and cut short an interview with those conducting it, according to the report. ONeill was fired shortly after he and other team officials arrived in Indianapolis for the leagues annual scouting combine. Turner didnt make the trip. In a news release announcing the firings, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said the behaviour described in the report was "against the core values of our organization." "After receiving the report, I conducted my own internal review of the facts to determine the appropriate steps for our organization," Ross said. "Jim Turner and Kevin ONeill are good people who care a great deal about their profession and the players whom they serve, but both exhibited poor judgment at times, which led me to this conclusion." Martin has two seasons remaining on his contract with the Dolphins, but last month Ross said he didnt believe the tackle would play again for Miami. Coach Joe Philbin made his first public comments since the reports release, saying the vulgar language and behaviour outlined were disappointing and unacceptable, and adding that fundamental values of respect were violated. "That ultimately rests on my shoulders, and I will be accountable moving forward for making sure that we emphasize a team-first culture of respect toward one another," Philbin said in a statement. The report found no evidence that Philbin was aware of abusive conduct within the team. Several people interviewed told investigators Turner gave McDonald a male sex doll as a gag gift around Christmas 2012. Turner told investigators he didnt remember the incident, but investigators said they didnt believe him. Martin told investigators ONeill and other team employees saw an assistant trainer being humiliated and didnt intervene. ONeill allegedly laughed at racial insults directed toward the assistant trainer. ONeill was the Dolphins trainer for 18 years and has been in the NFL for 25 years. He and his Miami staff won national awards, including one last year from the National Athletic Trainers Association.
